Massive retrenchment exercises in the chemical sector

CIEU places emphasis on training and upgrading skills for retrenched and existing workers. CIEU also supports wage restraint policy to help companies remain viable while increasing emphasis on productivity and adapting change to technology change

1991

CIEU’s 10th Anniversary

CIEU relocated to Jurong Workers Centre, later renamed NTUC Jurong Lifestyle Centre

1998

CIEU 21 finalised the five pillars in preparation for the 21st century:

  • Employability
  • Competitiveness
  • Quality Life
  • Care and Share more
  • Strong Union
2002 CIEU changes our constitution to increase each term from 3 years to 4 years
2005

Adoption of Jamiyah Children’s Home as CIEU’s supported Charity Home

Formation of Young CIEU for the development of younger union leaders through youth activism.

2006

CIEU focuses on 3 areas in Labour Movement 2011 initiatives:

  • Uth Movement (Youth workforce)
  • No Collar (Contract and Low Wage Workers)
  • Silver Collar (Mature workforce)
2007 20 CIEU partners pledged to practice fair employment practices with the Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices
2009

Singapore Economic Downturn

700 CIEU members sent for SPUR training due to downturn

2011 CIEU 30th Anniversary
2016 CIEU 35th Anniversary
Since 2017

In light of the rolling out of the Industry Transformation Map, CIEU increases its focus on training workers to increase their skill capability in handling Industry 4.0 and ensure their employability. 

This includes programmes like our collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic & e2i in developing bite-sized courses for Lab Technicians and Process Technicians.
